When Should My Child Start Nursery? Ages, Readiness Signs and ADEK Rules in Abu Dhabi

The short answer

Nurseries in Abu Dhabi can enrol children from over one day old until they turn four. Most start between one and three, usually when a parent returns to work. Readiness matters more than age: look at how your child copes with short separations and with familiar adults who are not you.

There is no perfect birthday for starting nursery. In practice, the question of when to start nursery usually arrives with a deadline attached: a return-to-work date, a new baby on the way, or a school application that suddenly feels close.

The good news is that Abu Dhabi gives families a wide window. This guide explains the official admission ages, what the best age to start nursery really depends on, the signs your child is ready, and how a new UAE-wide age rule changes the choice for three-year-olds.

The Nursery Admission Age in Abu Dhabi

Under ADEK's admission policy, a child must be more than one day old and less than four years old at the time they enrol in a nursery.

That is the legal range, not a promise that every nursery takes every age. Each nursery sets its own minimum age within its licence. Some have baby rooms, while others, including Treehouse Nursery, start from one year old.

When you apply, expect to provide your child's passport, residence visa, Emirates ID, birth certificate and vaccination records, along with health details and emergency contacts.

Nursery Age in Dubai: What Is Different

If you are moving between emirates, or comparing options on both sides of the border, the rules are not identical. Dubai's early childhood centres are overseen by the KHDA rather than ADEK, and under Dubai law a centre cannot enrol a child under six weeks old without KHDA approval.

The school starting ages, however, are now the same across the country, which brings us to the biggest change for 2026.

The New 31 December Age Cut-Off

From the 2026–27 academic year, schools whose academic year begins in August or September use a 31 December age cut-off instead of 31 August:

School yearYour child must turn...By
FS1 / Pre-KG3 years old31 December of the admission year
FS2 / KG14 years old31 December of the admission year

A child born in November 2023, for example, is eligible for FS1 in September 2026.

What Is the Best Age to Start Nursery?

The honest answer is that the best age to start nursery depends on your child and your family, not on a date. Here is what each stage tends to look like.

Around One Year Old

Many children start nursery around their first birthday, often because a parent is returning to work. At this age, children form close bonds with a small number of familiar adults, which is why ADEK requires at least one adult for every four children aged one to two. Shorter days to begin with can help.

Around Two Years Old

Two-year-olds are often beginning to show real interest in other children, and their language is developing quickly. Nursery gives them daily practice at taking turns, following simple routines and putting feelings into words.

Around Three Years Old

This is where the new cut-off creates a genuine choice. Your three-year-old may be eligible for FS1 at school, but nurseries in Abu Dhabi may enrol children up until they turn four, so staying put is also an option. Neither option is automatically better.

Staying at nursery can mean a smaller setting, familiar teachers and longer opening hours. Moving to FS1 can mean continuity into the school your child will attend for years. It helps to visit both and ask which environment your child is more likely to thrive in right now.

Signs Your Child Is Ready for Nursery

Readiness is less about milestones and more about how your child copes with small changes. Encouraging signs include:

  • They can be comforted by a familiar adult who is not you, such as a grandparent or nanny
  • They show interest in other children at the park or at play dates
  • They manage short separations, even if there are a few tears at first
  • Their eating and sleeping follow a fairly predictable pattern
  • They can let you know what they need, whether through words, signs or pointing

Your child does not need to be talking in sentences to start nursery. A good nursery will meet them where they are.

When It Might Be Worth Waiting a Few Months

Sometimes a short delay makes the start smoother. Consider timing carefully if:

  • A new sibling is due, or you are moving house. Try to start nursery well before or after, rather than in the same few weeks
  • Your child has just been unwell and is still getting back to normal
  • Your own schedule will not allow for a gradual settling-in period

How to Make the First Weeks Easier

ADEK requires nurseries to have settling-in procedures, so ask each nursery exactly how theirs works. Then give your child a head start at home:

  • Visit together first, so the rooms and faces are familiar
  • Start with shorter days where the nursery allows it
  • Keep goodbyes short and consistent. A quick, cheerful routine is kinder than a long, lingering one
  • Share your home routines with the teachers, including nap habits and the words your child uses for the toilet

At Treehouse, children who nap use pull-out cot beds, and we work around each child’s own sleep needs, so tell us what your child’s day looks like at home. You can read more about our daily routine.

Planning Your Start Date

Start looking at nurseries four to six months before you need a place, and ask each one about intake dates and waiting lists. Check term dates when you plan, and if you are still comparing settings, our guide to choosing the best nursery in Abu Dhabi will help.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age for nursery in Abu Dhabi?

ADEK's rules allow nurseries to enrol children who are more than one day old. Each nursery sets its own minimum age within its licence, so check with the nursery directly. Treehouse accepts children from one year old.

Is one year old too young to start nursery?

Not necessarily. Many children start happily at around one, especially with a gentle settling-in period and consistent key adults. What matters most is the quality of care and how your child responds to short separations.

Can my child stay at nursery until four instead of starting FS1?

Yes. A nursery place in Abu Dhabi remains available until your child turns four, so a child who is old enough for FS1 under the 31 December cut-off can still stay at nursery.

What age do children start nursery in Dubai?

In Dubai, early childhood centres are regulated by the KHDA and cannot enrol a child under six weeks old without KHDA approval. As in Abu Dhabi, each centre sets its own age range within that, and the 31 December school cut-off applies from 2026–27 to schools whose year starts in August or September.

How long does it take a child to settle into nursery?

It varies. Some children settle within a few days, while others take several weeks. Short, consistent goodbyes and close communication with the teachers usually help.
